Herb + Home: We Have Arrived ...or at least, We're On Our Way!

Posted by on

How did we get here? Where are we going? What can people expect now?

We have arrived. It's certainly been a journey of risk and trust, education, challenge, and triumph. A path that has been both humbling and empowering at the same time. We are full of gratitude, and excited for the spring and summer seasons, and the future ahead!

We're so excited in fact, we've hardly taken much time to reflect back on what this process has been and meant to us. What started as whisper of an idea from what feels like forever ago, is now manifesting into something tangible, and in my opinion, worthwhile! We've defined our mission:

We're striving to integrate sustainable, ecological design principles with practical plant applications for our homes, health and wellbeing.

We have the knowledge to do this, and it's what we feel called to do. For these reasons, I'm confident in the quality of work we have to offer.

Design has the ability to restructure our systems, and enable us to live more efficiently and healthfully. We can utilize our landscapes to these ends. It just takes some time, consideration, and planning.

Sometimes when I think about our modern society, especially with it's politics, and in the grind of New York City, I am reminded of The Paradox of Our Age. His Holiness, the ever-mindful XIVth Dalai Lama observed:

We have bigger houses, but smaller families;

more conveniences, but less time;

We have more degrees, but less sense;

more knowledge, but less judgement;

more experts, but more problems;

more medicines, but less healthiness;

We’ve been all the way to the moon and back,

but have trouble crossing the street to meet the new neighbor.

We built more computers to hold more

information to produce more copies than ever,

but have less communication;

We have become long on quantity,

but short on quality.

These are times of fast foods

but slow digestion;

Tall man but short character;

Steep profits but shallow relationships.

It’s a time when there is much in the window,

but nothing in the room.

Let's face it, this dichotomy of consciousness sometimes just rings true too loudly. It's been a really, rough year for humans, the climate, the environment, most species on the planet, to say the least...

And yet, we keep on keeping on.

When I first enrolled in my herbal training program, my good friend and fellow herbalist Darcie Black, founder of Sacred Seedlings, gifted to me what would become my personal herbal and alchemical guide to magic healing (basically), and in the very first page she inscribed a quote to remind and inspire:

"Remedies from chemicals will never stand in favorable comparison with the products of Nature; the living cell of a plant, the final result of the rays of the sun, the Mother of all life."- Thomas Edison

THOMAS EDISON. SCIENCE. BOOM. How clear it is, this makes so much sense!

I think it's important to acknowledge that too many of us suffer in our bodies without relief. Affected by imbalance and chronic illness we look to pharmacies for quick fixes. But the truth is, there are time-tested, safe-to-use remedies we can make in our own homes. With certain foods, herbs, and pantry ingredients, we can take responsibility for our own wellbeing, heal our aches and pains, and save money too. Though modern medicine has its place and has saved many lives, we at Herb + Home believe in and promote the practical application of medicinal and culinary nature-based materials as a method worth trying, exploring, and understanding. This method allows us to reconnect with nature in order to have our needs met and to thrive in a state of health and wellbeing.

We're dedicated in our work to integrate a paradigm of holistic self-care, based on a framework of traditional knowledge, an understanding of ecology and pharmacology, and the much deeper phenomenon of healing and wholeness.

The advantages of herbal home remedies are vast. Often, they are simple to use and simple to prepare. They allow us to take control of our health, and prevent issues from worsening. The herbal remedies we offer do not contain the harmful chemicals sometimes found in pharmaceuticals, and you’ll experience fewer side effects. Many of the remedies here are made from inexpensive ingredients, and often the same ingredients can treat multiple health issues. But most importantly, our blends, tonics, and products, inspired by classic herbal remedies, work. Traditional healers and practitioners have offered them for generations, and now with our personal take on them, they make leading a life of optimal health and wellness within reach and exciting!

Here at Herb + Home we are people who have personally struggled on our journeys to wellness. Yet we find that the quest for vibrant health brings us back time and again to our trusted plant allies, and often alternative medicine and integrative self-care practices. Through our studies and applications of classic home remedies and medicinal herbalism we have connected with a collective system of healing- a system that is ancient and perhaps now endangered as well. But we believe it is a system of our birthright and it is meant to be enduring. It is a system supported by nature, offering everything we need within our own biosphere, and it is a system to honor and share.

We want to help you to re-access your innate and inherent connection to plant life. It's amazing to witness these potent herbs work their magic to heal everyday health problems. We hope to help you feel empowered, and enjoy developing a relationship with Herb + Home and our products.

Importantly, we seek to help you to you use your own sense and listen to your body when working on self-care. Not every product has the same effect on every person, and especially herbs, because herbs are potent. We'll help to draw your attention to how you’re affected by herbal products and understand what is right for you. As always, we'll be sure to discuss when to see a medical doctor, and be honest with your physicians about what home herbs you use.

We’ve learned that vibrant health and vitality comes from everyday practice. Because of the age we are in, it is often difficult to be consistent and care for ourselves in the ways that we need to. But we’ve also learned that it’s never too late to live well, and plants help make us feel better when we aren’t feeling well.

Thank you for visiting Herb + Home, and please feel free to review the products we offer, and to contact us with any questions, comments, concerns, or feedback.
